How your redundancy is worked out

Statutory redundancy is 2 weeks' pay for every year of service, plus one extra week, with weekly pay capped at €600. You qualify after 2 years (104 weeks) of continuous service, and it is completely tax-free. Anything your employer pays on top, the ex-gratia, is tax-free up to the best of three reliefs, and only the part above that is taxed.

The statutory redundancy payment is the minimum the Redundancy Payments Acts guarantee, not what your employer has to stop at. It rests on two numbers: your gross weekly pay and your reckonable service, the years that count. Both are explained below the example.

A worked example

Aoife has 12 full years of service, earns €900 a week gross, and her employer offers an ex-gratia of €40,000. She has no pension lump sum and has never claimed a termination relief before.

StepWorkingAmount
Weekly pay used€900 is above the cap, so €600 counts€600
Weeks owed(2 × 12 years) + 1 bonus week25 weeks
Statutory redundancy25 × €600, tax-free€15,000
Basic Exemption€10,160 + (€765 × 12)€19,340
Increased ExemptionBasic + €10,000, no pension lump sum€29,340
SCSB€46,800 a year ÷ 15 × 12 years€37,440
Tax-free ex-gratiaThe highest of the three, SCSB€37,440
Taxable€40,000 − €37,440, income tax and USC, no PRSI€2,560

Of a €55,000 package, €52,440 reaches Aoife tax-free. What she pays on the last €2,560 depends on her other income that year, which is why the calculator above asks for it.

What counts as gross weekly pay

Your pay before tax and PRSI, made up of:

If you are paid monthly, your monthly pay is divided by 4.33 to get a weekly figure. You can enter weekly, monthly or yearly pay in the calculator and it does the conversion. If your hours or pay change from week to week, the average of the last 52 weeks you worked is used. Whatever the result, only the first €600 a week counts.

Which years count: reckonable service

Reckonable service is the time in your job that counts towards the payment. Holidays, sick leave, maternity, paternity, adoptive, parental and carer's leave, and a career break agreed with your employer all count. In your last 3 years only, four kinds of absence are taken off: sick leave beyond 26 weeks in a row, time off after a work injury beyond 52 weeks in a row, strikes, and lay-off. Absences before those 3 years are never deducted.

There is no upper age limit: it was removed in 2007, so you qualify at 60, 66 or older. You need to be over 16 and in fully insurable employment.

What the government calculator leaves out

The MyWelfare redundancy calculator is the official one, and it estimates statutory redundancy only. For most people that is the smaller part of the package. The ex-gratia, the relief that applies to it and the tax on the rest are what decide how much you actually take home, and that is the part this calculator adds.

Figures checked on 27 September 2026 against Citizens Information (statutory redundancy, the €600 cap, 104 weeks, gross weekly pay, reckonable service, who qualifies and the age limit) and Revenue (Basic Exemption, Increased Exemption, SCSB and the €200,000 lifetime limit). The example assumes the same pay for the last three years, which is what SCSB averages.

The jargon, explained simply

Everything that decides how much of your payment is tax-free.

1. Statutory redundancy
The legal minimum, paid if you have 2+ years of continuous service. It's 2 weeks' pay per year of service, plus one bonus week, with weekly pay capped at €600. Completely tax-free.
2. Ex-gratia (the employer's extra)
Extra money your employer chooses to pay, often agreed during the consultation period. This part can be taxable, but the reliefs below usually make a big chunk of it tax-free.
3. Basic Exemption
A tax-free slice of your ex-gratia: €10,160 + €765 per full year of service. 8 years → €10,160 + (8 × €765) = €16,280 tax-free.
4. Increased Exemption (+€10,000)
Add €10,000 on top of the Basic Exemption if you haven't claimed more than the Basic Exemption from a lump sum in the last 10 years, and you either have no work pension lump sum or give up your right to it. Any pension lump sum you keep reduces this €10,000 (over €10,000 and it's gone). It can only be granted once every 10 years.
5. SCSB (Standard Capital Superannuation Benefit)
Often the biggest relief for high pay or long service:
(Average yearly pay × Years of service ÷ 15) − pension lump sum
Revenue lets you use whichever relief gives the most tax-free money, this calculator does that automatically.
6. The €200,000 lifetime cap
A €200,000 lifetime limit on total tax-free ex-gratia across your career. Statutory redundancy doesn't count towards it.

Statutory redundancy by years of service

The most you can get at the €600 weekly cap. If you earn less than €600 a week, multiply the weeks by your gross weekly pay instead.

Redundancy calculator: frequently asked questions

How is statutory redundancy calculated in Ireland?
You get 2 weeks' pay for every year of service, plus one extra week. Weekly pay is capped at €600, so anyone earning more is paid as if they earned €600 a week. You need at least 2 years (104 weeks) of continuous service to qualify.
Is statutory redundancy capped?
Only the weekly pay is capped, at €600 a week (€31,200 a year). There is no cap on the number of years that count.
Is redundancy pay taxed in Ireland?
Statutory redundancy is completely tax-free. An ex-gratia payment from your employer is tax-free up to the best of three reliefs: the Basic Exemption, the Increased Exemption or SCSB. Anything above that is taxed with income tax and USC, never PRSI. More on tax on redundancy.
Which tax relief applies to my ex-gratia payment?
Whichever one gives you the most tax-free money. Revenue lets you choose, and this calculator works out all three and applies the highest. SCSB usually wins for higher earners and long service.
How is this different from the MyWelfare redundancy calculator?
The MyWelfare calculator estimates statutory redundancy only. This one also works out an ex-gratia lump sum, the tax-free portion under each relief, and what you take home after tax.
How much redundancy will I get for 10 or 20 years' service?
At the €600 weekly cap, 10 years is 21 weeks' pay, €12,600, and 20 years is 41 weeks' pay, €24,600. There is no cap on years, so 30 years is €36,600. If you earn less than €600 a week, the amount is lower.
What is the difference between statutory redundancy and ex-gratia?
Statutory redundancy is the legal minimum: 2 weeks' pay per year of service plus one week, capped at €600 a week, and always tax-free. Ex-gratia is anything extra your employer agrees to pay. It is tax-free up to the Basic Exemption, Increased Exemption or SCSB, and taxed above that.
Who pays statutory redundancy?
Your employer, when your job ends, usually on your last day or next payday, with a written statement of how it was worked out. If your employer cannot pay or is insolvent, you can apply for the payment from the Social Insurance Fund through the Department of Social Protection.
Do I qualify for redundancy if I am over 66?
Yes. The upper age limit of 66 was removed in 2007, and time worked after 66 counts too. You need to be over 16, in fully insurable employment, with 2 years' continuous service.
Does a redundancy payment affect my Jobseeker's payment?
Not Jobseeker's Pay-Related Benefit. For Jobseeker's Benefit, if you are under 55 and your redundancy payment is over €50,000, you can be disqualified for up to 9 weeks. Jobseeker's Allowance is means tested, so a lump sum kept as savings is counted as capital. More on jobseeker's payments.
What if I'm paid monthly?
Enter your monthly pay and the calculator converts it. Officially, monthly pay is divided by 4.33 to get the weekly figure, so the €600 cap is about €2,600 a month.
Does this calculator work in Dublin, Cork and the rest of Ireland?
Yes. Statutory redundancy and the tax reliefs are the same everywhere in the Republic of Ireland, whether you work in Dublin, Cork, Galway or Limerick. It does not cover Northern Ireland, which follows UK rules.
Is anything I enter saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
