This is as high as clinical nursing pay goes without moving into management, and the ceiling is above every clinical nurse manager grade.

Progression is automatic on your incremental date as long as your service is satisfactory. Time spent on a career break or otherwise out of service pushes your incremental date back.

What comes off your salary

Four deductions apply before your pay reaches your account, and one of them is specific to the public service.

Income tax, USC and PRSI

The same as any employee. Income tax at 20% up to €44,000 for a single person and 40% above, USC in bands from 0.5% to 8%, and PRSI at 4.2%.

ASC, the public service extra

The Additional Superannuation Contribution. Nothing on the first €34,500, then 3.33% to €60,000 and 3.5% above for Single Scheme members. Pre-2013 scheme members pay 10% and 10.5% on the same bands. It reduces your income tax but not your USC or PRSI.

One thing to be aware of: the take-home figures on this page include ASC but not your main superannuation contribution, which is charged separately and depends on which pension scheme you joined. Is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner the highest paid nursing grade?
It is the highest clinical nursing grade on the general scales. Its ceiling of €89,894 is above every clinical nurse manager grade, including CNM3 which stops at €81,478. Director level nursing and midwifery posts sit higher again, but those are management rather than clinical practice.
What is a candidate Advanced Nurse Practitioner paid?
From €72,146 to €81,478 over six points, which is the same scale as Clinical Nurse Manager 3. It applies while you are completing the requirements for registration as an ANP.
How much more does an ANP earn than a CNM2?
At the ceiling, €10,667 more: €89,894 against the €79,227 long service increment a CNM2 can reach. At the entry point the gap is much smaller, €72,843 against €62,699.
How long does it take to reach the top of the ANP scale?
About eight years on the grade, moving up one of the nine points a year. Because there is no long service increment, that is the end of the scale rather than a step before another one.
Do Advanced Midwife Practitioners earn the same?
Yes. The Advanced Midwife Practitioner scale is identical to the Advanced Nurse Practitioner scale, point for point, in the HSE consolidated scales.
Why do two steps on the scale jump so much more than the others?
That is how the scale is published. Most steps are around €1,400, but point 3 to point 4 rises by €4,178 and point 8 to point 9 by €4,409. We checked whether either was a long service increment printed in bold, which is how the source document marks them, and neither is. They are ordinary points.
Is an ANP paid more than a hospital consultant?
No, and the gap is very wide. An ANP tops out at €89,894 while a hospital consultant starts at €238,221 and reaches €286,151. They are different grades entirely rather than steps on one ladder.
When do these rates change next?
These are the rates effective 1 June 2026 under the Public Service Agreement 2024-2026, which is in its final year. The next change depends on the successor agreement, and we update this page when revised scales are published.
