Medical Scientist pay in Ireland

Fifteen points before the long service increment, and a senior grade whose ceiling is above every nursing grade in the health service. It is a long climb to a high finish.

The source document publishes three different Medical Scientist scales, and only one of them is current pay. The other two are labelled for pension benefit calculations covering people who left the grade before 1 January 2024 or before 17 June 2022, and their figures are lower. This page uses only the scale marked for those in post at 1 January 2024 and appointed since. Progression is automatic on your incremental date as long as your service is satisfactory. Time spent on a career break or otherwise out of service pushes your incremental date back. The Long Service Increment is not an annual increment: it is paid only after 3 years of satisfactory service at the maximum of the scale, which is why it appears 3 years after the last point rather than the year after it.

What comes off your salary

Four deductions apply before your pay reaches your account, and one of them is specific to the public service.

Income tax, USC and PRSI

The same as any employee. Income tax at 20% up to €44,000 for a single person and 40% above, USC in bands from 0.5% to 8%, and PRSI at 4.2%.

ASC, the public service extra

The Additional Superannuation Contribution. Nothing on the first €34,500, then 3.33% to €60,000 and 3.5% above for Single Scheme members. Pre-2013 scheme members pay 10% and 10.5% on the same bands. It reduces your income tax but not your USC or PRSI.

One thing to be aware of: the take-home figures on this page include ASC but not your main superannuation contribution, which is charged separately and depends on which pension scheme you joined. Your actual net pay will be somewhat lower. We show ASC because its rates are published and identical for everyone, while the main contribution varies.

How much does a Senior Medical Scientist earn?
From €68,687 to €90,688 over nine points, with no long service increment. That ceiling is the highest of any clinical grade covered on this site outside medicine, above the €89,894 an Advanced Nurse Practitioner reaches.
Why does the HSE document show more than one medical scientist scale?
Because two of them are not current pay. The document publishes separate scales for pension benefit calculations covering people who left the grade before 1 January 2024 or before 17 June 2022. Those figures are lower and are used to work out a pension, not a salary. The scale on this page is the one for people in post now.
Does a medical scientist earn more than a nurse?
At every stage, yes. A medical scientist starts at €45,279 against €38,166 for a staff nurse, and reaches €75,148 against €56,592. Even a Clinical Nurse Manager 2 on the long service increment, at €79,227, is only just ahead of the ordinary medical scientist ceiling.
Is a medical scientist the same as a laboratory technician?
They are separate grades with separate scales in the HSE document, and this page covers the Medical Scientist grade only. If your contract names a different grade, check which scale it puts you on before comparing yourself to these figures.
When do these rates change next?
These are effective 1 June 2026 under the Public Service Agreement 2024-2026, which is in its final year. The next change depends on the agreement that succeeds it, and we update this page when the Department of Health publishes revised scales.
